Tropical house plant #1 – HibiscusThe hibiscus is actually a huge family of different kinds of flowering plants suitable as tropical house plants. The Hibiscus comes as simple flowers, as bushes and even as small trees and the leaves can vary from type to type. What it is that is so special about the Hibiscus as so many want it as their tropical house plant is its huge flower that usually has very bright and colourful petals. Other kinds can be used for tea and even as a vegetable, but then it is no longer a tropical house plant but something best left to professionals.
Tropical house plant #2 – GingerYou may have heard about this before but probably not as a tropical house plant. It is true that the root of the ginger is used for beer, cool drinks and even in some medicine. But here we are not interested what might grow under ground but what happens above ground and how it looks like as a tropical house plant. Namely the ginger produces clusters of flowers beginning as white or pink buds and then blooming out into really attractive yellow flowers. It is fun to have a tropical house plant that probably everyone has heard of but no one has seen in real life.
Tropical house plants #3 – Agave filiferaThe agave is also a rather big family of flowers that brings you rosettes of big fleshy leaves rather than a normal bush or flower with stem and petals. Although most agave is not suitable as a tropical house plant, the agave filifera with its relatively small stature is. The rosettes grow to bloom only once and then die to leave room for new rosettes. Rather than a regular flower, this tropical house plant produces a lot of thin green leaves with white fibers growing out of them.
Tropical house plants #4 – Stromanthe TricolorThis tropical house plant is rather easy to grow and does well in full shade although it prefers filtered light. It is a colourful plant with leaves that sticks out of the ordinary with contrasting colours of green, white and red. The flowers are creamy white and a real beauty to look at. It will be an absolutely dreamy addition to your collection of tropical house plants.
These are some of my favourites and if these aren’t enough for your need of tropical house plants, sure to surf the web or ask at your local garden store, there are lots of plants for all tastes.
