Tropical Plant Care

Tropical plants are some of the most exotic and beautiful plants you can bring into your home and although most are relatively easy to care for, there are some things you need to think about. Tropical plants are, obviously, tropical. I couldn’t stress this enough because most people does not seem to realise this and treat their tropical plants as any other plant. Therefore will I now list some tips of tropical plants care.

Tropical plant care tip #1 – Know your plant

For starters, learn a lot more about just that specific tropical plant that you own. No general information can replace specialized know-how and a personal relationship to your plant. It will most certainly ensure the very best tropical plant care. If you are uncertain of what kind of plant you own, talk to your local garden store. They might know and could also give you lots of great tropical plant care tips. Bringing a photo will only help them to help you so don’t be afraid to be well prepared.

Tropical plant care tip #2 – Light & Water

As you should know by now, tropical plants originate from the tropics. That means loads of direct sunlight for good tropical plant care. Place your plants where there is a lot of full light, or use artificial light if available. Remember that the window itself might magnify the suns rays and injure your plant. For best tropical plant care, regularly rotate the plant so it gets light from all directions. When it comes to watering, do never underwater a tropical plant. But look out for overwatering because this will make the roots rot. A rule of thumb is to water just enough every time the soil looks dry. This can vary very much so stay alert.

Tropical plant care tip #3 – Temperature & Humidity

You should think of temperature and humidity as sides of the same coin, they affect the plant, each other and should affect your tropical plant care. During winter, do not let the temperature get to high and do not let the leaves get wet. The plant might believe it is growth period and the light is far too weak to support the plant. During summer, when light floods in and temperature usually rises, humidity in a common home is far to low for a tropical plant. Spray its leaves to keep it moist but be careful not to wet the flowers because these will then rot and fall off. It will not be a sign of good tropical plant care.

Tropical plant care tip #4 – Soil & Fertilizer

These are serious things that you shouldn’t mess around with by yourself and there are no rules of thumb. The best tropical plant care should be to buy soil and fertilizer that are especially suited for your specific plant. Ask at your local garden store and they will help you, they are experts and they are there to help you.
